This weekend, late Saturday night 4/27 (but really Sunday 4/28) at 12:30 am, Bill Ortiz’s interview with Chuy Gomez (CMC/KMEL) will air on California Music Channel Beat Lounge Video show. The local broadcast channel is KTSF SF-Oak-SJ Channel 8. It will also be available On-Demand on Comcast Cable after the first broadcast. It will also be available on CMC’s website http://www.cmc-tv.com/
A longstanding member of the Santana band, Bill Ortiz is proud to present a music video for the song “We Are What We Are” from his new full-length release Highest Wish. This new video features Casual from the legendary hip hop crew Hieroglyphics and was filmed entirely on locations in San Francisco and Oakland. This video is the first music video from Highest Wish and is both visually engaging and maintains the spiritual message that is embodied in all of Bill’s music.
Hip-hop’s already got a violinist (see: Miri Ben-Ari), and now it’s got a trumpeter. Bill Ortiz plays with Carlos Santana and is a prolific musician in his own right, perhaps most famously blowing his horn on Souls of Mischief’s “’93 Til Infinity.” He released a hip-hop album last year, Highest Wish, featuring a selection of rappers, including this Casual of Hieroglyphics, who appears on “We Are What We Are.” Now, the song’s been given the visual treatment, which you can stream above.
Trumpeter Bill Ortiz is a musician’s musician, who has gained a reputations working with artists ranging from En Vogue to Boz Scaggs to Tony Toni Tone over the past fifteen years, culminating in his long relationship in Santana. But he is also a hot solo artist, bringing in other talented artists to share his funky, fun vision.
His newest album, Highest Wish, was a hit with SoulTrackers when we featured it over the Summer, and those who liked it may be even more smitten with his newest single, featuring bandmate Luqman Frank on vocals.

We had the pleasure to work with the fabulous trumpet artist, Bill Ortiz. Bill has a number of albums out of his own that we highly recommend. Check out his website www.billortiz.com for more information. We are listening to his latest CD, “Highest Wish,” right now. You can also catch Bill on tour much of the year with guitar-legend Santana.
He sounds great on his valve-aligned Martin and now has some Reeves pieces to make his job even easier!
I almost had this under progressive rock. There are a lot of different sounds to this, lending towards that “progressive” heading. Ultimately, though, the mix lands somewhere closer to jazz and R&B with some hip hop added for good measure. Whatever you want to call it, though, this is a strong disc.
I am giving away one of my very own trumpets, a Bach TR300. To enter, it is so easy, just…
